The club ended the Autumn Term by holding it’s first ever Cyclo-Cross event on Saturday, and it proved to be a great success.

(A full set of photos taken by Elaine Bramley of the Saffron Walden Camera club can be viewed on our Flickr site)

Each training group took part in a race around a 1km loop at the Friends School which included some points where they had to dismount and push the bikes before remounting again and another section of the course which included some very tight turns. Each group raced for different lengths of time before hearing the bell which indicated one lap to go. As in Formula 1, once the winner has crossed the line, all racers finished on that lap.

There was some great racing  and lots of smiling faces at the end despite the cold. Particular notable performances came from Matt Butler and Anna Whelan who both hit mechanical problems and ended up running half a lap to the finish line.

After the mist had cleared following the senior race in the morning, our juniors were treated to wonderful weather and the club had 37 members racing.

The Youths and Tristar race set off at 1pm and WaldenJNR were quickly at the front. Ptolemy Hand lead the way from start to finish although he was hard pressed by Daniel Blocksage from Newmarket on the bike. There were very strong performances behind with Charlie Passfield (3rd Tristar 3), Alex Howlett (4th Tristar 3) and Luke Diana(2nd Youth) not far behind. Maddie Trevillion was our only girl in this race and she finished third in the girls Youth race.

Last Sunday 17th July a few Walden JNR athletes were in action at the St. Albans Triathlon organised by Tri-Force. The event was held at the Sandringham school and was a well organised and well supported event. It was a good one for the spectators too with most of the action centred around a fairly small area. The only slight downside was the weather which delivered a series of squally showers, but at least we were blessed with sunshine in between the wind and rain.

Well done to Group 2 member Maddy Delliston who has managed to get her picture and funding raising efforts for Cancer Research in today's London Metro which has a daily circulation of 800,000.

That was the easy bit, now all she has  to do is swim the 56 miles!!

If you wish to support Maddy in her fund raising efforts go to her website

You can view Maddy's progress as she swims the miles here.

Well done to all 23 members who competed so successfully at Chelmsford. Conditions were tough with a testing bike course and windy conditions, but they all enjoyed running on the tartan track at the end! We had great support for each other and there was no bigger cheer than when George Peasgood sprinted across the line at the end the morning.

Helene Dyce in the Tristar 1 category was closest to a win, losing in a sprint finish, but only because she had to avoid a bollard 10 meters from the line. Alex Dale, who finished second would surely have won the Tristart boys category had he been able to get his shoes on more quickly and Sophie Jones (3rd) would probably have won the Youth girls category had it not been for gear problems on the bike. She his blaming her bike mechanic!

Sophie running to T1

Club member Sophie Jones (racing for Cambridge Tri)  took part in the Youth Supersprint race at Blenhiem Palace. This was her first open water swim race, her first drafting races not to mention her first race cycling on tarmac!

The race was the first of two qualification races to represent the Eastern Region Youth team at the Inter Regional Championships on 4 Sept with three places up for grabs. The entry was restricted to only expereinced athletes and a small but very high quality field had been assembled in including a national team from Wales.
